When the body becomes permanently resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin, which builds up in the blood, which can lead to pre diabetes and diabetes over time

Ants have answer to traffic issues.

Taking inspiration from nature, researchers in Australia are keenly observing the crowd flow of ants to help design exits that function more effectively during evacuation of large buildings and spoting arenas. When a building is is burning down, how do you control evacuation of a panic crowd of people? Australian researchers have come up with some answers using the crowd flow of ants.Crowd safety is emerging as an important issue worldwide following numerous incidents in which crowd panic has resulted in injuries and/or death. Reseachers have used a bio-inspired approach to better understand human traffic flow and potentially save lives in lare scale emergency situations

What distresses workers the most?

Employees who face high emotional demand and conflicting roles are more likely to report psychological distress.Factors that up psychological distresses in employees ascertained. 16 percent of workers said that they were atleast slightly bothered by psychological distress including symptoms of depression and anxiety over the past month. Things that can help you become smarter.

Diversifying one's perspectives can help boost intelligence. Here are things to keep in mind:
1. All intelligence is situational, as it is mostly product of the situations that people are on.
2. A belief oriented around fixed limits stifles intelligence, while a belief s continuous capacity to grow stimulates intelligence.
3. An expert's knowledge is well organised, around a core f center principles; it is flexible and transferable to new situations and is self aware.
4. Focused attention is an important internal situation that a person must cultivate in order to fully express their intelligence.
5. People should take specific, concrete actions when their original plans don't work out as expected.
6. For technology to make people smarter, they need to know when to put it away.

why is it easier to lose 2-4 pounds than just 3?

Consumers are more likely to pursue a goal when they set a high low range goal instead of a single number goal, a new study revealed. This is because they experience a greater sense of accomplishment when the goal is attainable and challenging which makes them want to pursue their goal. High-low range goals influences consumer goal reengagement, which is driven by the attainability and challenge of the goal. In one study, consumers in a weight loss program set either high low range or single number goals. At the end of the program, consumers with high - low range goals reenrolled in the program at higher rates even though there was no difference in actual average weight loss according to two groups.

Peer pressure drives applause: You clap, I clap.

If you have just seen a play that you privately think is drivel, will you keep silent when everyone around you demands an encore? Possibly not, says an unusual investigation published Wednesday in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. Combining a psychological experiment and mathematical analysis, the research marks a scientific attempt to quantify the fuzzy notion of "social contagion" - how individual behaviour is influenced by group dynamics. A research video taped groups of university students as they responded to a seven minutes Powerpoint presentation. Neither the students nor the presenters knew the applause was being analysed. The results were revealing. People in the audience didn't make an independent told AFP by email. Instead they responded very predictably to the social pressure around them, which is believed they felt through the volume of clapping in the room. As more people started clapping, each individual who hadn't started felt more pressure to join in, the statistics showed.

Baldness drug may curb men's alcohol intake.

A drug used by men to slow a receding hair line may also reduce their alcohol craving a new study claims. Researcher Michael S Irwig assistant professor of medicine at George Washington University School Of Medicine and Health Sciences found that men who used the medication Finasteride (Propecia) and developed persistent sexual side effects, are also drinking less alcohol  than before. While robust literature exists on he interaction between Finasteride and alcohol rodents, this is first study to examine the role of Finasteride in alcohol consumption in humans with male pattern hair loss. Finasteride leads to decreased concentrations of important hormones in the brain called neurosteroids. This is an important step towards better understanding the breadth of side effects in human from the drug Finasteride.

An automated cycle parking system developed by China.

Cycling in japan is the most common mode of transport in china. And this is the reason why there is always the problems of cycle parking there. Well, from now on the people out there will no longer be facing an problem. China has developed an automatic parking system for the people. Those system of parking is kept underground so that there is not much usage of space. To park the cycles people don't have to go in the basement to park their cycles instead they have to take their cycles to the eco cycle room. An IC frame is made on the cycles in the eco room. The censors on the door of the room read the IC frame. After that the front wheel of the cycle is kept at the required place and loading button is to be pressed. The cycle automatically goes down the 38 floor parking with the help of transport tree. This parking can park 204 cycles at one time. Getting once's cycle back takes just 13 seconds.

3-D image of the tiniest insects created by the researchers.

The researchers of Australia have created a 3D image of the tiniest creatures on earth. Australian scientists have used state of the art technology to create super-sized titanium replica of insects. The researchers have used advanced technology to study these creatures. The researchers at Australian National Science Agency CSIRO would son enable them to handle and examine bugs, some of which are so small that they are barely visible to the naked eye, in large scale detail for the first time. CSIRO used 3D technology to create a computer aided design file of exact dimensions and then created the replica, which is up to 50 times their original size, using a 3D printer. However, in upcoming months the commonwealth agency is hoping to replicate  bugs anatomy down to the minute detail.

Worried that the chicken would die of hunger now that they were going to be making lots of money from him, they started feeding Miracle Mike with an eyedropper. They toured and did fairs and Mike became a hero of sorts. Thousands of people turned out to see him everywhere he went. He was on magazine covers and studied by lots of scientists too.Occasionally Mike would start choking and the farmer would use a syringe to suction out his throat, but one night Mike started choking and the farmer didn't have the syringe to help him. Clothes that will purify the air.

The brainchild of artist/designer professor Helen Storey and chemist Tony Ryan is pioneering a new project to discover how we can harness the surface of our clothing to purify the air we breathe. By combining the world of fashion and chemistry Henry and Tony have found a way to create style with real substance. This type pf clothing which purifies the air we breathe through our clothes is known as catalytic clothing.  catalytic clothing work as an air purifying machine in which nanoparticles are washed away. By adding photocatalyst   to fabrics like denim, then turning these fabrics into wearable garments such as jeans, catalytic clothing gives you the capacity to neutralise the pollution as you go about your daily life. Wherever you go, your clothing goes. And wherever your catalytic clothing goes it cleans the air.

A pair of shorts that charges your phone when you walk.

Scientists have invented a pair of shorts which store energy to charge wearer's phone battery while they are on their move. An average person wearing the power shorts and going for a stroll can generate enough energy to charge a battery for four hours. The power shorts are made using a fabric which changes walking to electrical power. Gaps in the clothes are squashed together during normal movement and energy created is then converted into juice for your mobile. In addition to the shorts the scientists have also come up with a sleeping bag to charge your smartphones when you are asleep. The mechanism to charge in this is similar to the power shorts but instead of movement turns body heat into battery for a mobile. And after a person sleeps for eight hours he stores enough energy to power their mobiles for the rest of the day.

Eating cheese can help to fight against cavities.

Eating cheese, particularly as a snack -reduces the acids that cause cavities and gum disease. Cheese stimulates saliva production, which is body's way of keeping mouth at a normal acidity level. The saliva helps remove any residues in the mouth, and also provides a buffer against high acidity. Cheese also helps re mineralise teeth surrounded by acids. Cheese increases dental plaque pH and thereby decreases the risk of cavities and gum disease. Eating a diet rich in dairy products is important in maintaining good health, and its especially vital to bone health. A pH level below 5.5 indicates that the person faces a risk of tooth erosion, where in tooth erosion wears away. This makes the teeth vulnerable to dental cavities and other problems.A pH level of above 5.5 indicates a reduced risk of developing cavities.

Eating mangoes linked to low blood sugar.

A study has revealed that consumption of mangoes may have a positive effect on blood sugar on obese individuals an reduce cancer risk. The study led by Oklahoma State University's Nutritional Sciences Associate Professor Edraline Lucas examined the effects of daily mango consumption on clinical parameters and boy composition in obese subjects. According to the researchers, mango contains nutrients and other bioactive components that can provide various health benefits, the Daily Times reported. "It is high in fiber, vitamin A and C, as well as other minerals. In addition to the positive effects on body fat, blood lipids and glucose, it is not associated with serious side effects such as negative effects on bone that is linked with the use of nosiglitazone, a drug commonly used to lower blood sugar," he said. Blood sugar levels at the conclusion of the study were significantly lower than the baseline both male and female subjects.

Humans of the future might look like Pokemon characters in the future.

Forget cyborgs — humans of the future might look more like Pokémon characters. In 100,000 years, people might have larger heads, Google Glass type contact lenses and sideways-blinking oversized Disney eyes that glow green with cat-like night vision. At least, that is what two researchers say could happen in "one possible timeline.""This is speculation based on reason," artist Nickolay Lamm told the Daily News. "When I designed it I wasn't thinking of anime, but I can see the resemblance. It's kind of a coincidence that that happened."Lamm teamed up with computational geneticist Alan Kwan to envision a future where zygotic genome engineering technology develops to the point where humans will be able to control their own evolution the way we control electrons today."In this future," Kwan said, "humankind has wrested control of the human form from natural evolution and are able to bend human biology to human needs."This ability, the team says in their report, could result in more facial features that humans find intrinsically attractive: strong lines, straight nose, intense eyes and perfect symmetry. But other changes will be driven by function, they suggest.

A class of 24 twins.

A school broke a world record by having 24 sets of twins. The middle school in Illinois has the most sets of twins in a single grade. They discovered the fact when twin boys Luke and Ryan Novosel, both 11, began counting up all the other twins in their Highcrest Middle School directory, in Wilmette, Ill. “We were absolutely shocked,” said their mother, Nancy Fendley. “It’s blowing it away,” she added. With some help from mom and dad, the boys submitted an application with Guinness earlier this year and after following up with birth certificates, photos and proof that all are enrolled at the school, they are to receive official recognition in several weeks. Most of the twins, who are mostly fraternal are three sets of boy-boy twins, 11 sets of girl-girl twins and 10 sets of boy-girl twins. The two sets of identical twins are girls. They are all in their fifth grade.“I think it’s just statistically kind of bizarre,” Fendley said.Three schools share the current record of 16 pairs of twins in one grade; Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines, Iowa; Staples High School in Westport, Conn.; and Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Ill.Federal statistics show about 33 twins per 1,000 births in 2010.“The whole school thinks it’s the greatest thing, It’s been such a fun, creative experience,” Fendley said.

Egyptian girl with two heads and one body.

We all have heard of twins, identical twins and even conjoined twins for that matter. But ever heard of a pair of twins out of which one baby just had a head and no body? Also that the under developed twin's head blinked and smiled but wasn't capable of survival. Well this was the case of Manar Maged. The Egyptian girl was born with a birth defect called craniopagus parasiticus. This is a very rare birth glitch that occurs when the embryo splits into two parts but refuses to complete the process leaving its twin with loads of brain diseases. Manar was operated with a team of 13 surgeons on 19 February 2005 when she was 10 months old to separate her conjoined twin. The procedure being complex and ambiguous the surgery lasted 13 long hours. The little kid though survived the surgery and subsequent brain operations but eventually died an year later on 25 March 2006 due to excessive brain infection, pneumonia and serious heart condition.

A Russian billionaire planning to become immortal by 2045.

Dimitry Itskov, a 32 year old Russian billionaire is planning on living forever. He plans to achieve this feat by 2045, which gives the name of his idea-"Initiative 2045". He has a simple plan to make an android body for himself. The idea aims to create the technology enabling the transfer of a persons personality into an advanced  non biological carrier and extending life, including to the point of immortality. Itskov has named his "advanced non biological carrier" "an avatar", which is regulated by a brain computer interface. Itskov says it functions somehow like the 2009 James Cameron movie Avatar. Itskov also says that by the year 2025 he expects autonomous life support system for a human brain linked to a robot, which means he will be on a hold of technology that could implant human brain into a robot. By the year 2035 a human should be able to upload there brain into a robot and by the year 2045 we will be replaced by holograms or our body will be. "We will transform into a new species, when this will happen," says Itskov.

Eating less can boost your brain and help you remember more.

Eating less could help you remember more, researchers have found.Skipping dessert and having an after-dinner coffee instead could also be good for your brain, as well as your waistline. The news comes from an Italian study into ‘calorific restriction’ – the idea that near-starvation rations boost health and extend life.Scientists have long known of the phenomenon, but have struggled to work out just what it is about severely cutting calories that improves health.Researcher Giovambattista Pani decided to focus on a protein called CREB1 that is known to be important to memory and learning. In experiments on mice, he showed that cutting calories boosted learning if the animals could still make CREB1. He also showed that cutting calories boosts the amount of the protein made in the brain. The animals’ calorie count was only cut by 25 to 30 per cent. In human terms, this equates to about 600 calories a day.

Cadbury spends Euro 6 million on making its chocolate bars stand up.

Since then when cadbury announced plans to ditch 200 staff to cut cost, owner Kraft is spending euro 6 million flipping dairy milk bars upright at the tills. Now, just over a year after the quintessentially English firm was taken over by the American processed-cheese giant, it has spent £6million on new packaging to make the chocolate bars stand erect in their cardboard boxes, the Mail can reveal. The expensive ‘innovation’ is aimed at capturing more impulse purchases. Research showed customers are more likely to succumb to their sweet tooth if they see a complete bar of chocolate rather than just its side.Kraft is using the cash on a new production line at its factory in Birmingham to repackage bars of Dairy Milk, Whole Nut, and Fruit and Nut. Each cardboard box will be fitted with a spring that prevents the bars from falling over. It also pushes the confectionery forward each time one is removed

Statue of liberty was originally meant to be in not in America.

The statue of liberty was originally meant to like Arab peasant and to be at the entrance of Suez Canal in Egypt and her flame was to symbolize the light she was bringing to Asia. The sculptor Barthaldi fell in love with middle east and all it entailed in 1855. Barthaldi returned to Egypt in 1869 with a blueprint of giant statue of a woman that would double as a lighthouse at the entrance of the Suez Canal. Egypt wasn't reaping any of the monetary benefits of the canal even though it was located in Egypt. Barthaldi realized that he could never put his statue in Egypt, because they didn't have the financial means. He was heartbroken and sailed to New York. As his ship entered New York harbor, Barthaldi spotted the deserted, oval island of Bedloe. It was perfect for his statue. The French and Americans were friends, and between the two of them, they paid for the statue. The statue was revamped and sent to the US.

Workers exposed to daylight have better quality of life.

A new study has demonstrated a strong relationship between workplace daylight exposure and office workers- sleep, activity and quality of life. Compared to workers in offices without windows in the workplace, and those with windows in the workplace received 173 percent more white light exposure during work hours and slept an average of 46 minutes more per night. There also was a trend for workers in offices with windows to have more physical activity than those without windows. workers without windows reported poorer scores than there counterparts on quality of life measures related to physical problems and vitality, as well as poorer outcome on measures of overall sleep quality, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction. "The extent to which daylight exposure impacts office workers is remarkable," study co author Ivy Cheung, a doctoral candidate in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience program at Northwestern University at Chicago, Illinois said.

Menu labeling lowers caloric intake.

According to a new research, menu labeling has made ore people aware of how many calories are in restaurant meals and has some people reducing their intake. The study evaluated the effects of new requirements for chain restaurants to label their menu items with their corresponding caloric content by following restaurant patrons 18 months after implementation of the law- a longer period than previously published studies. The researchers looked at various types of chain restaurants, including burger restaurants, sandwich shops and coffee shops. "Most people have no idea how many calories are found in restaurant meals," said lead study author James Kreiger, MD, MPH, of the public health department of Seattle and King County in Washington. The study found that after the regulations were put in place, more people reported being aware of posted caloric information. after 18 months, customers of taco restaurants consumed fewer overall calories from beverages. Those results may be due to 'customization', Krieger said, people can decide whether to put additional calories of sour cream or guacomole on a taco.

Health benefits of coconut.

Coconut butter was used as a 'universal donor', making it identical to human blood plasma. It was used in the pacific war to save thousands of lives through coconut IV's, and emergency plasma transfusions. surprisingly, coconut water is more nutritious than whole milk. Iys crammed with natural sugars, salts, and vitamins to block out fatigue. Coconut water could potentially be the greatest energy drink in the world, to top it off, it's all natural. Coconut water contains more potassium than the majority of energy drinks. The chloride it holds is at 118g, and it's natural sugar extent to about 5mg. Most importantly, coconut water contains less sodium  than any other energy drink.

McD hamburger perfectly preserved after 14 years.

In 1999, a man from Utah bought a McDonald's hamburger and kept for 14 years. The burger looked exactly the same as and when he first bought it. David Whipple kept the fast food meal for a month to show friends how the preservative packed hamburger would keep its composure. But he forgot about it, finding it two years later in his coat pocket  then he decided to continue bizarre experiment. However, even he was shocked to see that the hamburger still looks the same a whopping 14 years later. 'It sat in  my coat pocket for a year or two after it sat in my truck' David told US talk show, The doctors. 'When we discovered it, we were like, "oh my gosh! I can't believe it looks the same way". Mr Whipple has no plans to part with his historic burger and has said he will shoe it to his grandchildren.

Pics clicked by chimp to fetch 70,000 pounds.

A collection of blurry photos taken y a chimp, touted as his "take on the world", is expected to fetch up to a whopping 70000 pounds at a London auction. Mikki, the chimpanzee, was taught to use camera by Russian artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid after they discoveres him at the Moscow circus. The 15 year old chimp's snaps of Moscow's Red Square are said to represent his take on the world in a place where millions of photos are taken by tourists, The sun reported. The collection -called Our Moscow Through The Eyes Of Mikki- will be sold at an auction this month and is expected to fetch between 50000 and 70000 pounds. The pictures taken in 1998, include a shot of Mikki being taught how to hold and use a camera before he begins to shoot. "It's a very important piece of work, and it is very exciting to be able to sell pictures at an auction," Suad Garayeva, Creator of Contemporary Art at Sotheby's London, said. 'There's been a lot of interest because its very unusual and it works on so many different levels. It's an alternative view of Moscow as seen through an alternative vision," he said.

Your brain rewires itself after injury.

When the brains primary learning center is damaged, complex new neural circuits arise to compensate for the lost function, as concluded by life scientists from UCLA and Australia who have pinpointed the regions of the brain involved in creating the alternate pathways- often far from the damaged site. The researchers found that parts of the prefrontal cortex take over when the Hippocampus, the brain's key center of learning and memory formation, is disabled. Their breakthrough discovery could potentially help scientists develop new treatments for Alzheime's disease, stroke and other conditions involoving damage to the brain. For the study, Fenselow and Zelikowsky conducted laboratory experiments with rats that had suffered damaged to the hippocampus. While the rats needed more training than they would have normally, they nonetheless learned from their experiences- a surprising finding.

20 minutes bout of yoga boosts brain function.

A single, 20 minute session of yoga can significantly improve brain function, a new study led by an Indian origin researcher has found. University of Illinois student Neha Gothe and her colleagues found that a 20 minute session of Hatha Yoga improved participants speed and accuracy on tests of working memory and inhibitory control, two measures of brain function associated with ability to maintain focus and take in, retain and use new information. Participants performed significantly better immediately after the yoga practice than after moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise for the same amount of time. The 30 study subjects were young, female, undergraduate students. "Yoga is an ancient Indian science and way of life that includes not only physical movements and postures but also regulate breathing and meditation," said Neha Gothe, who led the study while graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

In water, a can of diet coke floats while a can of regular coke sinks.

The artificial sweetener in diet diet coke is hundred of times sweeter per unit volume than regular sugar, However, sugar in regular coke is denser, which makes it sink. Regular coke contains almost 11 teaspoons of sugar per can. On an average, Americans ingest 10.8 pounds of sugar per person from drinking coca-cola alone. Floating occurs because floating objects displace, or push aside, a certain amount of liquid. If an object displaces more than its weight in liquid, it floats; otherwise it sinks. Some other facts about coke are:
1. If every drop of coke ever produced were put into 8 ounce bottles and laud end to end, they'd reach moon and back over 2000 times.
2. Coca cola spends more money on advertising than Microsoft and Apple.
3. The average Mexican drinks more coke than average American, British, Indian and Chinese combined.

Soon, robots may be able to mimic human gait.

A group of US researchers has produced a robotic set of legs which they believe is the first to fully model walking in a biologically accurate manner. The neural architecture, musculoskeletal architecture and sensory feedback pathways in humans have been simplified and built into the robot, giving it a remarkably human like walking gait. The robots biological accuracy has allowed the researchers to investigate the processes underlying walking in humans and may bolster theories of how babies learn to walk as well as helping to know how spinal cord injury can recover the the ability to walk, the journal of neural engineering reports. The key component of human walking system is pattern generator (CPG). CPG is a neural network in spinal cord region that generates rhythmic muscle signals
