Ants have answer to traffic issues.

Taking inspiration from nature, researchers in Australia are keenly observing the crowd flow of ants to help design exits that function more effectively during evacuation of large buildings and spoting arenas. When a building is is burning down, how do you control evacuation of a panic crowd of people? Australian researchers have come up with some answers using the crowd flow of ants.Crowd safety is emerging as an important issue worldwide following numerous incidents in which crowd panic has resulted in injuries and/or death. Reseachers have used a bio-inspired approach to better understand human traffic flow and potentially save lives in lare scale emergency situations

What distresses workers the most?

Employees who face high emotional demand and conflicting roles are more likely to report psychological distress.Factors that up psychological distresses in employees ascertained. 16 percent of workers said that they were atleast slightly bothered by psychological distress including symptoms of depression and anxiety over the past month. Among major risk factors are role conflict: Being given work tasks without enough resources and receiving contradictory requests from different people. The major risk factor is emotional demand, "defined as dealing with strong feelings such as sorrow, anger, depression, and frustration" at work. These factors were the most important and most consistent risk factors" for psychological distress.

Things that can help you become smarter.

Diversifying one's perspectives can help boost intelligence. Here are things to keep in mind:
1. All intelligence is situational, as it is mostly product of the situations that people are on.
2. A belief oriented around fixed limits stifles intelligence, while a belief s continuous capacity to grow stimulates intelligence.
3. An expert's knowledge is well organised, around a core f center principles; it is flexible and transferable to new situations and is self aware.
4. Focused attention is an important internal situation that a person must cultivate in order to fully express their intelligence.
5. People should take specific, concrete actions when their original plans don't work out as expected.
6. For technology to make people smarter, they need to know when to put it away.

why is it easier to lose 2-4 pounds than just 3?

Consumers are more likely to pursue a goal when they set a high low range goal instead of a single number goal, a new study revealed. This is because they experience a greater sense of accomplishment when the goal is attainable and challenging which makes them want to pursue their goal. High-low range goals influences consumer goal reengagement, which is driven by the attainability and challenge of the goal. In one study, consumers in a weight loss program set either high low range or single number goals. At the end of the program, consumers with high - low range goals reenrolled in the program at higher rates even though there was no difference in actual average weight loss according to two groups.

Peer pressure drives applause: You clap, I clap.

If you have just seen a play that you privately think is drivel, will you keep silent when everyone around you demands an encore? Possibly not, says an unusual investigation published Wednesday in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. Combining a psychological experiment and mathematical analysis, the research marks a scientific attempt to quantify the fuzzy notion of "social contagion" - how individual behaviour is influenced by group dynamics. A research video taped groups of university students as they responded to a seven minutes Powerpoint presentation. Neither the students nor the presenters knew the applause was being analysed. The results were revealing. People in the audience didn't make an independent told AFP by email. Instead they responded very predictably to the social pressure around them, which is believed they felt through the volume of clapping in the room. As more people started clapping, each individual who hadn't started felt more pressure to join in, the statistics showed.

Baldness drug may curb men's alcohol intake.

A drug used by men to slow a receding hair line may also reduce their alcohol craving a new study claims. Researcher Michael S Irwig assistant professor of medicine at George Washington University School Of Medicine and Health Sciences found that men who used the medication Finasteride (Propecia) and developed persistent sexual side effects, are also drinking less alcohol  than before. While robust literature exists on he interaction between Finasteride and alcohol rodents, this is first study to examine the role of Finasteride in alcohol consumption in humans with male pattern hair loss. Finasteride leads to decreased concentrations of important hormones in the brain called neurosteroids. This is an important step towards better understanding the breadth of side effects in human from the drug Finasteride.

An automated cycle parking system developed by China.

Cycling in japan is the most common mode of transport in china. And this is the reason why there is always the problems of cycle parking there. Well, from now on the people out there will no longer be facing an problem. China has developed an automatic parking system for the people. Those system of parking is kept underground so that there is not much usage of space. To park the cycles people don't have to go in the basement to park their cycles instead they have to take their cycles to the eco cycle room. An IC frame is made on the cycles in the eco room. The censors on the door of the room read the IC frame. After that the front wheel of the cycle is kept at the required place and loading button is to be pressed. The cycle automatically goes down the 38 floor parking with the help of transport tree. This parking can park 204 cycles at one time. Getting once's cycle back takes just 13 seconds.

Worlds tallest tower bridge opened by China.

China has opened up worlds longest and widest bridge for the commuters of China. The world's longest and widest multi pylon cable stayed bridge has opened in China after seven years of construction work. The Jiaxing-Shaoxing sea bridge stretches 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) over the Hangzhuo Bay, in Shaoxing, China. It is mainky supported by two cable wires, both of which reach 745ft in the air and has a main body stretching 2560ft wide. The high speed bridge is designed for vehicles travelling exclusively above 60mph and pedestrains, motorbikes and cars with a maximum speed below 45mph are not allowed to cross. A cable stayed bridge has one of more towers where the cables are attached to support the bridge's deck.

3-D image of the tiniest insects created by the researchers.

The researchers of Australia have created a 3D image of the tiniest creatures on earth. Australian scientists have used state of the art technology to create super-sized titanium replica of insects. The researchers have used advanced technology to study these creatures. The researchers at Australian National Science Agency CSIRO would son enable them to handle and examine bugs, some of which are so small that they are barely visible to the naked eye, in large scale detail for the first time. CSIRO used 3D technology to create a computer aided design file of exact dimensions and then created the replica, which is up to 50 times their original size, using a 3D printer. However, in upcoming months the commonwealth agency is hoping to replicate  bugs anatomy down to the minute detail.

A chicken named Mike lived for 18 months after its head was cut off.

A chicken named Mike in Florida after being chopped off his head by a farmer still survived 18 moths of its life.the farmer decided it was Mike's time, so went and grabbed him and chopped off his head. Like a lot of headless chickens, this one ran around for a bit after getting the chop. Usually that doesn't last too long though so the farmer waited. The chicken kept moving.Days later the chicken was still alive, even minus his head. People started coming to the farm to check out the chicken, and he got really popular. People came from miles around to see him. Worried that the chicken would die of hunger now that they were going to be making lots of money from him, they started feeding Miracle Mike with an eyedropper. They toured and did fairs and Mike became a hero of sorts. Thousands of people turned out to see him everywhere he went. He was on magazine covers and studied by lots of scientists too.Occasionally Mike would start choking and the farmer would use a syringe to suction out his throat, but one night Mike started choking and the farmer didn't have the syringe to help him. So, Mike finally died 18 months after his head was chopped off.
